The 22 February earthquake damaged much of the Arts Centre with the result that nearly the entire complex was ''red stickered'' and fenced off from public access. On the 23 March the Arts Centre of Christchurch Trust Board sent us a letter giving notice of termination of our lease, which we do not accept.Our premises has not been significantly damaged. The motives for terminating all leases is a mystery,given that it is the tenants who have made the Arts Centre the attracton that it has been. Many Christchurch residents regard the site as part of the soul of Christchurch that should be resurrected for the people of Christchurh. We have registered with the Trust board our desire to return. In reply Ken Franklin, Arts Centre director wrote:
"We have complete respect for the business that you operate, and are delighted that you have expressed a desire to return at some stage to the site"
Lets hope he keeps his word.
I have been enchanted and encouraged by support from the people of Christchurch and around the world.People stop me in the street, dismayed, saying they can't do without Annies, we love Annies, and you must come back! If we can't go back to the Arts Centre site in the foreseeable future, we will be looking at possible temporary alternatives nearby. We do want to keep our identity with the Arts Centre, otherwise people will not recognize Annies as Annies. Please keep us in your minds-we look forward to serving you that very special glass of wine. Somewhere.
Many of you will have Annies' vouchers. I assure you that these will be honoured when and where we re-open.
